What is ozone therapy? A doctor's guide for Dublin patients

2025-09-01 · Dr. Evelyn Gaite

Ozone therapy is a complementary medical treatment that has been used for over 100 years. If you've heard about it and are wondering whether it might be right for you, this guide covers the essentials — from what ozone therapy is, to how it works and what conditions it can support.

What is ozone therapy?

Ozone therapy uses medical ozone (O₃) — a form of oxygen with an extra oxygen atom — as a therapeutic treatment. While regular oxygen (O₂) is what we breathe, ozone has unique properties that make it useful in medicine.

It's important to understand that medical ozone is not the same as environmental ozone pollution. Medical ozone is produced in a controlled clinical setting, at precise concentrations, and administered by a licensed physician.

How does ozone therapy work?

Ozone therapy works by stimulating your body's natural healing processes. The main mechanisms include:

  • Improving oxygen delivery to tissues
  • Reducing inflammation — a root cause of many chronic conditions
  • Boosting antioxidant defences — helping your cells protect themselves
  • Supporting immune function — regulating and strengthening immune response
  • Improving circulation — better blood flow means better healing

What conditions can ozone therapy help with?

Ozone therapy is used worldwide as a complementary treatment to support:

  • Joint pain — arthritis, tendinitis, herniated discs
  • Chronic fatigue and low energy
  • Fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndromes
  • Circulation problems — poor circulation, cold hands and feet, diabetic ulcers
  • Immune support — frequent infections, recovery from illness

It's important to note that ozone therapy is a complementary treatment. It works alongside conventional medicine — it does not replace it.

How is ozone therapy administered?

There are several methods, chosen based on your condition and treatment goals:

  1. Autohemotherapy (MAH) — a small amount of your blood is drawn, mixed with medical ozone, and re-infused. This is the most common systemic method.
  2. Rectal insufflation — ozone gas is gently introduced into the colon, where it's absorbed into the bloodstream.
  3. Topical application — ozone gas or ozonated oils are applied to the skin for wounds, infections or joint pain.
  4. Local injections — ozone is injected into or around joints, tendons or painful areas.

Is ozone therapy safe?

When performed by a trained, licensed physician at appropriate doses, medical ozone therapy is safe. Side effects are rare and usually mild — such as slight fatigue or a healing reaction in the first few sessions.

At Evelyn's Medical Care, ozone therapy is delivered by Dr. Evelyn Gaite, who is certified in ozone therapy and integrative medicine, and a member of AEPROMO (the Spanish Association of Medical Professionals in Ozone Therapy).
